On this page you can watch our new arrival Harley grow and develop from week to week, together with a diary of how he is behaving. If you see some words in red these might be falconry terms and you can find the meaning of these words in the glossary page

This will be the last entry for Harley as he is now fully grown but you can see him in the gallery.

I hope you have enjoyed watching him grow and developing as much as I have enjoyed rearing him.

Love Mum xx

WEEK 1 - 10th May 2011 - 4 Weeks Old

Hi Everyone

My Name is Harley and I am a Eurasian Eagle Owl.

I'm 4 weeks old and have just arrived at my new home with Hoots Owls.  Mum has made me a lovely bed in the kitchen and I have already made friend's with all the family.

At the moment I seem to be hungry all the time, thats because I am growing very quickly and I will be almost fully grown by the time I am 12 weeks old so got to keep my strength up and eat lots is I want to be a big strong owl.

Mum says I won't be going out just yet as I am still too small but hopefully once I get my new anklets and jesses on I will be out and about.

I am looking forward to meeting you all

WEEK 2 - 17th May 2011 - 5 Weeks Old

Hi Everyone

Well what a difference a week makes, Mum says I have doubled in size in just one week.  I am now standing up on my rather large feet all by myself and stretching out my wings.  I am still eating lots of food and mum has to feed me 3 times a day.  I still sleep quite alot and I have discovered that I like watching TV with the family but only after the human baby has gone to bed because he likes to chase me round the living room but we are becoming realy good friends.

See you next week.

WEEK 3 - 24th May 2011 -  6 Weeks Old

Hi Everyone

As you can see I'm still growing fast, Mum says the biggest difference in me this week is that my adult feathers are starting to come through - can you see them in the photo at the bottom of my wing (they are a darker colour than the rest of me) I've now been to my first event and got to meet the Alloway Brownies which was a great treat as they made alot of fuss over me.  Think I could get used to being petted all the time.

See you next week.

WEEK 4 - 31st May 2011 - 7 Weeks Old

Hi Everyone

Check me out I'm sitting up on my perch just like a big owl, Mum is very proud of me.  I have accomplished 2 major things this week the 1st being the perch and Mum took me to get my ankletson (thats the leather bits around my feet  you can see) I am now a lot bigger that I was last week I think I have almost doubled in size as I am still eating lots. My adult feathers are now coming through fast and I also have a tail, it feels a bit itchy so I can often be found scratching

See you next week.

WEEK 5 - 7th June 2011 - 8 Weeks Old

Hi Everyone

Thats me left the nursery and now have my very own Avairy next to the other owls, i'm starting to feel very grown up and part of the team.  My adult feathers are now coming in very fast can you see between my shoulders these have only just come through in the last couple of days. Also my face is starting to change and is not so fluffy.

Mum says i'm a very hansom chap hee hee

See you next week.

WEEK 6 - 14th June - 9 weeks Old

Hi Everyone

Can you see how big my wings are getting, Mum says i'll be flying in no time at all. I've now been to my first outside event as a full member of the team and it was a bit scary but I managed to sit for a few photos so thanks to everyone who came to see us at Calderglen and were very patient with me.  I'm not so hungry all the time now so mum has cut my feeding down to twice a day.

See you next week.

WEEK 7 - 21st June - 10 weeks old

Hi Everyone

I'm starting to look very grown up now, nearly all my baby feathers have gone and I now have lovely long sleek feathers instead of fluff.  Mum says I'm sitting much better on the glove. On Sunday we were at the Mela Festival in Glasgow and I only fell over a couple of times when I was lifted so I'm making great progress.  Also if you look closely at the photo you can see my tufts are coming in on the top of my head.

See you next week.

WEEK 8 28th June - 11 weeks old

 Hi All

As you can see i'm a very big owl now and have nearly reached my full size, thank goodness as I'm not quite as hungry all the time now.  I am now a fully working member of the Hoots team and mum is very proud of me. My face has gotten broader and the only baby feathers I have now are the ones at the bottom of my chest. My wings are now fully developed and I can fly as well.

See you next week.

WEEK 9 5th July - 12 weeks old

Hi Everyone

Well I'm just about all done growing up the way but mum says i've still got to fill out a bit, I think that means that my chest will get a bit bigger and a bit fatter (lol). Also it has now been decided due to my size and weight that I am definately a boy.  Mum has been working a lot with me this week as I am off to my 1st full weekend show at Kelso next week so we want to make sure that I am prepared to do a good job and bring many smiles to alot of people who come to see us.

WEEK 10 12th July - 13 weeks old

Hi Everyone

I had a big adventure at the weekend. I was at Kelso Bikefest with mum and dad as well as some of our friends from Owl Magic and we had a great time. I was handled by lots of people and had my picture taken lots of times.  I was vey good on the glove and sat well although sometimes I forgot to concentrate and fell off (especially when I saw any dogs).  It was a busy 2 days and I worked very hard.  Me and mum had a special treat of sitting on the policeman's motorbike and having our photo done.
