Anklets - These are strips of leather that are fixed around the owls feet and are usually kept on the bird at all times. They are made of soft leather and fitted to each bird individually to ensure comfort

An aviary is a large enclosure for confining birds. Unlike cages, aviaries allow birds a larger living space where they can fly; hence, aviaries are also sometimes known as flight cages. Aviaries often contain plants and shrubbery to simulate a natural environment.

Some owls have tufts, feathers sticking up on the top of both sides of the head. Tufts do not improve hearing. Tufts make the owl appear larger, which helps to ward off predators and also distort their silhouette, making them appear less bird-like.

These are long pieces of leather that go through the eyelet of the anklet to allow the falconer to safely hold the owl on the glove.

This is worn on the arm to protect against the owls' sharp talons and no bird of prey should be handled without one.  Even Merlin and Magic who are very small have very sharp claws.

This is a process that handlers use to make the owl tame and people friendly.  It requires a lot of time and patience (just like a human child). When imprinting it is a good idea to get the owl as young as possible so the process can begin straight away.

A vet who specialises in the treatment of Birds.  Birds are very different from dogs, cats and other mammals so an avaian vet has to undertake special additional training.

Our Vet is the very wonderful Mr Alistair Lawrie.
